The Cubalaya Breed originated in Cuba in the 19th century. These chickens are an oriental breed and are thought to be traced back to the Philippine Islands. This Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam is not recognized in the American Standard of Perfection yet, but some color varieties are, such as the Black, Black Breasted Red, and the White.

Cubalaya Bantams are a miniature version of the standard size Cubalaya. These rare breed chickens have a pea comb, impressive carriage, short beaks, broad, short heads, and a well-spread tail that is carried low. The roosters are not known to produce a spur, but if they do it is usually just a nub.

This breed is slow to grow and produce a hard feather which makes them very heat hardy. The hens are very frequently broody which makes them great mothers however; they can be aggressive and are not recommended for mixed flocks. They can be very noisy and do not take confinement well. The Wheaten Cubalaya Bantam will make a superb show bird for your 4H or FFA student.
