Here at Chickens for Backyards, we believe every child should have the chance to handle and raise backyard chickens. Not only are chickens adorable companions, but they can also be a great learning opportunity. Raising backyard chickens can help kids learn about responsibility and about where our food comes from.
However, while there are many wonderful chicken breeds out there, you obviously want one that will coexist well with your children. That’s why we’ve listed our top 3 chicken breeds for kids.
Silkies
Silkies are perhaps the most kid-friendly chicken breed out there. They are sweet, mild-tempered, and friendly. You will never have to worry about this breed getting too aggressive with your kids—in fact, quite the opposite! They’ll be more than happy to receive a few pets and scratches from your kids. Plus, since they’re smaller than other chicken breeds, they’ll be easy for your children to handle.
Orpingtons
Orpingtons are cool, calm, and collected. As such, they’re a great breed for rambunctious kids who might scare off more skittish chicken breeds. They’re often considered the “golden retriever of chickens” because of their good nature and friendly personality. Orpingtons are almost always docile and gentle, so you won’t have to worry about any aggression.
Cochins
Cochins are often considered “gentle giants,” and for good reason! While they are on the large side, they are not aggressive. Your kids may not be able to pick them up easily like with Silkies, but they can always give them lots of pets and treats. Cochins are friendly and calm, but they can be a bit high maintenance. Due to that and their size, Cochins are best for older children.
Here at Chickens for Backyards, we have plenty of Silkies, Orpingtons, Cochins, and other gentle chicken breeds for your children to help raise. Order online or contact us today with further questions!
