The White Jersey Giant chicken gets its name from the breed’s home state of New Jersey. It was developed in the 1880s and admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1947.
This breed is slow to mature into one of the largest purebred chickens in North America. It is an excellent meat bird and, with its pure white feathers, easy to pluck clean.
Further, White Jersey Giant hens lay up to 260 large brown eggs per year. They tend to go broody in the spring and make outstanding mothers.
The chicks start out with smokey gray down, then feather out into all-white plumage. The legs and feet range from willow (dark gray-green) to nearly black.
Despite their large size, Jersey Giants are not a bit aggressive but have a calm, easy going nature. They are super gentle backyard pets, as well as being superior dual purpose meat-and-egg chickens. Their white plumage makes a striking contrast to Black Jersey Giants, also offered here at Chickens for Backyards.
