The perky Wheaten Old English Game Bantam has an alert and self-assured bearing. The males feature beautiful orange, red, and black feathers. The more muted females have stippled wheaten plumage complemented by black tail feathers.
These diminutive chickens thrive in limited living space with little by way of feed. They are also excellent foragers. The hens are rather poor layers. But they excel as broody hens and fiercely protective mothers.
The Wheaten Old English Game Bantam makes a terrific choice as a low-maintenance backyard chicken. When handled as chicks, these birds become tame and friendly. That plus their small size makes them tremendously popular as pets.
Old English Game Bantams are also easily trained for exhibition and often comprise one of the biggest classes at poultry shows. Old English Game Bantams come in numerous color varieties. The American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection standardized the female Wheaten variety in 1943 and the male 1949.
