The Silver Duckwing Yokohama is an elegant, pheasant-like chicken with an upright stance and game-like alertness. Interestingly, the hens and roosters have quite different plumage patterns.
The hens’ feathers are black mingled with white, giving them the appearance of being gray, set off by a salmon-colored breast. Roosters are black with a contrasting silver head and neck, shoulders, saddle, and wing bay.
The rooster’s saddle feathers and tail feathers are unusually long. They can grow as much as 3 feet in a year. For the best growth rate, chicks should be fed slightly more protein than usual.
Due to their long tail feathers, this breed does best in a warm, dry climate, rather than a cold, wet one. They also like to have freedom to roam with plenty of opportunities to forage.
As beautiful as it is, the Silver Duckwing Yokohama has not yet been admitted to American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection. The two standardized varieties are White Yokohama and Red Shoulder Yokohama, both available here at Chickens for Backyards.
