The plumage of the Self Blue Old English Game Bantam is a lovely soft gray, an appealing color that’s also called lavender. This variety was accepted into the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1965.
Handled as chicks, Old English Game Bantams enjoy being around people. This trait, combined with their diminutive size, make them easy to show. For those same reasons, they also make beloved pets, especially for children.
The Self Blue color is not the same as Blue. The Self Blue Old English Game Bantam is the same shade all over. In contrast, the plumage color of the Blue Old English Game Bantam is not uniform, but combines shades of darker and lighter blue laced with black.
Mating Self Blues results in 100% lavender chicks. Mating blues results in some blue-black chicks and some Splash Old English Game Bantam chicks.
These little birds don’t eat much and don’t take up much space. They are also excellent foragers, making them one of the most self-sufficient chicken breeds.
