The wheaten Saipan Chicken comes from Saipan, the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands. The hens are various shades of tan and brown, in other words shades of wheat. The much darker roosters are black with red neck, saddle, and wing feathers. They have a pea comb and no wattles.
The hens lay only about 40 to 90 medium-size eggs per year, but are excellent broodies and wonderfully protective mothers. The Saipan chicken thrives in hot, humid weather, loves to forage, and is wary of predators. On the other hand, this breed can be aggressive toward other chickens.
Slow-maturing Saipans are essentially an ornamental breed. Their most impressive feature, aside from the striking contrast in color between the hens and roosters, is their height. These chickens have an upright stance, and the roosters can grow as tall as 3 feet — quite the conversation starter!
