The Rhode Island White is a heritage breed originating in the state of Rhode Island in 1888. Although the rose comb variety of this breed was standardized in the American Standard of Perfection in 1922, offered here is the non-standardized single comb production type renown as a good winter layer.
Rhode Island Whites are relatively rare. They are extremely docile dual-purpose chickens, suitable not just for egg production, but also for meat. A broad, deep body gives these chicken a blocky brick-like appearance. Their tightly feathered plumage is entirely white, topped with a bright red comb.
Rhode Island White hens are used in the creation of Golden Comet chickens, available here at Chickens for Backyards. We also offer the unrelated Rhode Island Red.
