This chicken breed is named after the Japanese port city of Yokohama, from which it and other longtail breeds were originally exported to other parts of the world. The Red Shoulder Yokohama was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1981.
The rooster’s tail feathers can grow as long as 3 feet. To achieve this outstanding length, feed the chicks a little extra protein.
For the benefit of the roosters’ long tail feathers, these chickens do best in a warm, dry climate rather than a cold, wet climate. They also prefer an environment where they can roam and forage.
Yokohamas are similar in size, shape, stance, and their notably long tails to Phoenix chickens. However, where the Phoenix has a single comb and white earlobes, the Yokohama has a walnut comb and red earlobes.
The Red Shoulder Yokohama resembles the lovely White Yokohama, but instead of being all white, it has gorgeous red shoulder and breast feathers. Chickens for Backyards also offers the Silver Duckwing Yokohama.
