The smart looking Ginger Red Old English Game Bantam rooster has a lustrous red head, orange-yellow neck and saddle feathers, a ginger red breast, and rich red wings and back, all set off by a black tail and slate blue shanks. The lovely hens have somewhat more muted ginger feathers with black trim.
The Ginger Red Old English Game Bantam was recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1982. Its alert and confident attitude, combined with extraordinary beauty, makes this breed popular at exhibition.
Because of their small size, Old English Game Bantams require little by way of living space and feed. They are also excellent foragers.
The hens, while not prolific layers, are extremely protective mothers. The roosters guard the hens and may even help raise chicks.
Docile Ginger Red Old English Game Bantams make terrific low-maintenance pets. They are easy to train and long lived, making them an especially good choice for children. Also available here at Chickens for Backyards is a colorful variety of other Old English Game Bantams.
