Buff is the original plumage color of the Cochin breed, which originates from Shanghai, China. The Buff Cochin standard chicken arrived in North America in the early to mid 1800s. It was first listed in the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874.

The Cochin is a large breed, appearing all the more massive because of its ample coat of soft plumage, which extends down the legs and covers the feet. The feather color of this variety is a rich golden buff.

Cochin hens love to brood. Because of their large size, they can easily cover not only regular chicken eggs but also larger eggs, such as those of turkeys, geese, and ducks.

The Cochins’ appetite matches their size, making them good foragers. However, they don’t do well in a hot climate, unless provided with lots of cool, shady areas where they can rest to avoid heat stress. Because of all their leg feathering, they also do not like muddy conditions.

Despite their size, Cochins have an amazingly gentle disposition, more so than most other breeds. Their laid-back attitude makes them suitable for living spaces that might be considered too confining for some of the more active breeds.

Thanks to their awe-inspiring appearance and easy temperament, Buff Cochin standard chickens are extremely popular for exhibition. They also make excellent backyard pets that are especially well-behaved around children.

I ordered 1 cochin mixed with leghorns and rhode Island Reds recently, and they sent me an extra cochin! They’re so cute and so very fluffy! They were packaged extremely well the adorable nest they make inside for the chicks with a heat pack inside helping keep them warm and safe. I would 100% buy from them again they’ve definitely become the only place now I’ll order my chicks from they care so much and are so wonderful to work with!
