About Black Swedish Ducks
As with the Blue Swedish, the Black Swedish was developed in the Pomerania area of Europe. At the time it was part of the Swedish Kingdom but is now the area of northeast Germany and northwest Poland. They were first imported into the USA in the late 1800s.
The advantage of the Black Swedish over the Blue Swedish is that the Black Swedish breed true. If you mate a Black Swedish with a Black Swedish, all the progeny will be Black Swedish. They are slow maturing ducks. The Black Swedish ducks are all black except for a white patch on the chest and wings. They are similar in size to a Pekin Duck. They are a noisy duck. The female has a yelp-type quack and the male has a low pitch tone.
The Black Swedish ducks are a hardy, strong duck with good foraging ability. They do not prosper well in confinement. They have very social behavior but remain calm at the same time which makes this breed a great addition to the family as a pet. Daffy Duck, of Warner Brothers fame, is probably a Black Swedish
