The Delaware chicken exhibits traits from both its ancestor breeds, with the black and white coloring of the Barred Plymouth Rock and the long feathers and proud posture of the New Hampshire chicken. Though it is now a popular dual-purpose breed, the Delaware chicken was the preferred meat chicken until the rise of the faster-growing Cornish. The Delaware chicken also grows and feathers quickly, reaching a weight of about seven or eight pounds and produces about 180 to 260 large, brown eggs a year.
