About Cayuga Ducks

The Cayuga breed is thought to have been developed from the wild Black Duck breed in the region of Lake Cayuga in New York. This makes it one of the few ducks originating in the United States. Cayuga ducks were admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Before the arrival of the Pekin breed, they were the bird of choice for meat production in the Northeast. They are listed as “Threatened” by The Livestock Conservancy.

The Cayuga duck we have for sale has a very brilliant “beetle” green sheen to their feathers. This is especially evident on the head of the male. Their feather color is very similar to the Black East Indie but records indicate the Cayuga duck was developed before the Black East Indie. They are the most popular for showing in the medium weight class. As they age Cayuga ducks become almost all white after several years. This changing of colors occurs much quicker in females than males. Also, their black legs turn more orange in color as they age.

The Cayuga adapts to its area better than most domesticated ducks. They will keep the ground cleared of snails, slugs and most other insects. Cayuga ducks are an excellent pet choice for someone who has close neighbors. They do not frequently quack and when they do it is not very loud. They also stay close to home and do not fly. They will also sit on their eggs and hatch cute babies more often than other breeds.

They remain a very hardy duck and many of their eggs have varying degrees of gray in the shell color. On rare occasions, they will lay a pure black egg. The Cayuga egg is mostly used for eating and baking because of its excellent taste.
