The Black Cochin Standard chicken is one of the most popular breeds for exhibition. It has been recognized by the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection since 1874.
Cochins have a naturally calm and friendly disposition. Despite their large size, they do not mind close confinement. That’s one of the reasons they make great show birds. Their easy temperament also accounts for their popularity as backyard pets.
Because of their profusion of feathers, Cochins prefer a cool climate over hot weather. They are excellent foragers. And the hens are reliable setters and good mothers.
This variety has shiny black plumage. But don’t be alarmed if some white feathers appear in youngsters during their first and second stage molt. By the time they reach six months of age the plumage should be all black.
Black Cochin Standard chickens also come in a bantam size. You can find them here at Chickens for Backyards.
