The Phoenix chicken breed is notable for the roosters’ exceptionally long tail. The Black Breasted Red Phoenix standard has been recognized by the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection since 2017.
The Phoenix breed originates from Japan with further development in Germany. The breed is named after a beautiful bird in Greek mythology.
The rooster’s tail can reach an impressive length of 5 feet. Saddle feathers grow up to a foot and a half long, with sickles at least twice as long. The black breasted red variety has a beautiful red saddle, a black breast, white earlobes, and a single comb. The hens lay small cream colored or tinted eggs.
For the protection of their long tails, Phoenix chickens need a clean environment, a spacious coop with lots of places to perch, and a large yard with wind breaks. A high protein diet encourages tail feather growth.
