The elegant White Yokohama chicken originated in Japan, but was developed in Europe into the breed we know today. The breed name comes from the Japanese port city from which Yokohamas and other longtail chicken breeds were first exported to other parts of the world. The American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection admitted the White Yokohama in 1981.
Yokohamas share history with the Phoenix chicken. The two breeds are similar in size, in their pheasant-like bodies, and in their game-like alertness. And both breeds have especially long tail and saddle feathers. The main difference is that Yokohamas have a walnut-shape comb and red earlobes, while the Phoenix has a single comb and white earlobes.
The Yokohama rooster’s tail can grow to 3 feet long. This growth rate is best achieved by feeding chicks a little extra protein. Because of their long tail feathers, these chickens prefer warm, dry conditions over cold, wet weather.
Other varieties of Yokohama chickens available here at Chickens for Backyards include the Red Shoulder Yokohama and the Silver Duckwing Yokohama. This breed is best suited to an environment where the birds have freedom to roam and forage.
