The gorgeous White Phoenix Standard chicken gets its name from the beautiful Phoenix bird of Greek mythology. The males have exceptionally long tail feathers that can grow up to 5 feet long.
Unlike most feathers, the tail feathers of the Phoenix rooster continue to grow. A high protein diet encourages continued growth. To further enhance tail growth, the Phoenix molts less frequently than most other chickens.
To preserve their long tail feathers, Phoenix chickens require ample space in the coop and yard, with lots of perches. The yard should include adequate wind breaks to prevent wind damage.
Phoenix hens lay small, lightly tinted eggs. Their egg production is rather low because they love to brood and raise chicks.
In addition to the White Phoenix Standard, Chickens for Backyards also offers the smaller but equally beautiful White Phoenix Bantam. Both Phoenix varieties are not yet recognized by the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection.
