Splash Sumatra

The Sumatra chicken is an ancient breed that originates from the island of Sumatra. The Splash Sumatra chicken has lovely pale blue or white plumage mixed with random patches of dark blue and black, as if splattered or splashed with paint.

Sumatras feature a pea comb, small or no wattles, and long flowing tail feathers. The breed is also noted for typically having three or more spurs on each shank.

The Sumatra is a capable flier and therefore requires an enclosure with an especially high fence or an overhead cover. The hens are seasonally prolific layers of small eggs with white shells. They are excellent setters and exceptionally good mothers.

The American Standard of Perfection does not recognize the Splash Sumatra. This variety lacks genetics for the dark facial skin characteristic of the Black Sumatra and Blue Sumatra. Nevertheless, this elegant bird makes an outstanding ornamental chicken to grace your backyard.
