The Golden Duckwing Phoenix Bantam rooster has golden plumage with a jet black breast and tail. The hen has more muted but lovely straw colored plumage and a salmon breast. This variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1983.
The rooster’s saddle and tail feathers can grow exceptionally long. Enhance the growth of these long feathers by feeding a game bird ration containing 20% protein. To discourage molting, use electric lights to augment natural light for 15 hours of combined light during the short-day season.
Also important is keeping the long tail feathers from getting soiled. For this reason, position perches high enough to prevent the feathers from hanging in litter. Also, use deep shavings and replace them at least once a week.
Phoenix chickens are active birds that enjoy a large yard that provides freedom of movement, but away from buffeting winds. And they prefer a climate with temperatures of 50ºF or above.
The larger Golden Duckwing Phoenix Standard is also available from Chickens for Backyards, along with a variety of other Phoenix breeds, both standard and bantam. Phoenix hens are good layers and caring mothers.
