Often referred to as the “gentle giants” of the chicken world, Light Brahma chickens first arrived in the U.S. in the mid-1800s from India, by way of China. From the very start, they were regarded as one of the largest chickens in the country, and remain a favorite of those who prefer larger-bodied breeds today. Full-grown female Light Brahma chickens can grow to be more than 9 pounds, while males can eventually reach 12 pounds.
Aside from their larger frames, Light Brahma chickens draw attention from their beautiful white feathers with black and green-sheened lacing around their necks and legs. Unlike many other breeds, the Light Brahma has feathers down its legs and feet, giving them the amusing illusion of wearing big, fluffy boots.
Despite their size, Light Brahma are peaceful birds that will rarely become aggressive with other chickens. Because Light Brahma chickens are so gentle with both people and other chickens, they have become popular as backyard pets. It’s worth mentioning, however, that due to their docile nature, it’s usually not a good idea to put them with more active chickens, as they may be susceptible to bullying. If you plan to add them to a flock, we recommend putting them with other passive breeds.
While Light Brahma chickens make great pets for your backyard, they will also prove to be good layers, producing brown, medium-sized eggs for your family. They can also be broody hens and would make great mothers, given the chance.

cute!
We ordered a few different breeds… The company sent exactly what we hoped for and packed them to ship great! All arrived healthy and alert. This Light Brahma is super cute and spunky! She’s getting along great with the others. 🙂

Love my light Brahma
We love our light brahma! When I placed my order, needing it to arrive the next week, one of the chicks I chose was not available. A very nice representative called to see if there was a different chick I might like to be able to fulfill my order in the timeframe needed. She told me about the light brahma and I am so glad she did. Our light brahma, name Scarlett O’hara, is just so cute with her little feathered feet. Such a calm and friendly girl. We can’t say enough kind things about Chickens for Backyards. They were a pleasure to deal with and all chicks arrived warm (even though it was winter and we were in 19 degree weather!) healthy and chirping. All my hens are now 6 months old and just started laying. Thanks!

pretty chicks
We have received 2 orders from Chickens for Backyards in the past 6 months- both shipments were great! Everyone survived, hopped out of the box, and starting eating/drinking. Amazing. Our first set of girls are beautiful! Big healthy thriving hens. We ended up with a Roo and CFB were wonderful to work with and reimbursed us. He was gorgeous! But loud and had to move to a farm. 2nd set are still young, but they are thriving and growing. We don’t have a favorite big hen as they are all so different but all sweet and super friendly – Barred Plymouth, Buff Orpington and Americauna. They’ve been laying for a few months now. New chicks – Production Red, Laced Wyndotte, Americauna, and Light Brahma. My only disappointment is that our first Americauna is not laying blue/green eggs. They are large light eggs Maybe the second one will lay different colors?? I think you get much better quality hens than you would from the local tractor supply. These are good looking girls!

Great Birds
I ordered 5 hens a year and a half ago from here and they all arrived alive and all ended up being hens! (which i hoped for. i only wanted 4 hens but ordered 5 just in case one ended up being a rooster). They started laying at 5 months and did not stop until late this fall (at 1.5 years of age) for their first molt. This included getting on average 3 eggs a day all winter, including February which was the coldest February on record. All but one of the hens is large body. The only thing i do not like about them is that compared light Brahmas i have had in the past these girls are not so docile. 2 of them will peck you if you try and touch them, and they will peck you if you are not wearing tall boots and try herding them into an area they do not want to go to.

We received our Brahmas with our Wyandottes, every one of them arrived healthy, happy and full of personality. Each one seems to be different in her own way, we ordered pullets, for eggs and cannot wait to see how they grow.
