Non-industrial Leghorn chickens were first brought to North America in 1852 by Captain Gates. In 1853 Mr. Simpson received a shipment of White Leghorns at Boston Harbor. In 1870 Mr. Tegetmeier imported White Leghorns to England from America. They were crossbred with Minorca chickens to increase the breed’s size. These birds were reintroduced into America in 1910 to help build the commercial poultry industry.

In 1946 the White Leghorn chicken inspired the creation of famous Looney Tunes character, Foghorn J. Leghorn.

White Leghorn chickens are known for being very active and independent. They are excellent free-range chickens that love to roam and forage if given the opportunity. They will pay no mind to your beautiful flower bed. Also, keep in mind is that White Leghorn chickens can be very nervous birds, so keeping them in a small, tight coop may not be the best option. We recommend that they are given enough space to truly flourish. Their bright, white feathers, tend to attract predators. This is just something that you will want to be mindful of if you choose to purchase White Leghorn baby chicks from Chickens for Backyards.

Those who welcome White Leghorn chickens to their farm or backyard typically do so because of their reputation for superior egg production. While female White Leghorn chickens only grow to be 3 to 4 pounds and males grow to be 5 to 6 pounds, don’t let their size fool you. This breed can produce anywhere from 250 to 300 extra-large white eggs annually. They are not usually broody, however, so it is likely that their eggs will need to be incubated. Commercial egg producers continue to call on the White Leghorn chicken for their eggs, and they continue to deliver.

Egg Color White Hardiness Heat
Egg Size Large Broody No
Egg Production Excellent Hen Weight 3-4 lbs

    Beautiful Birds
We ordered just one White Leghorn specifically for the white egg she would lay. We wanted a variety of egg colors which is the reason we ordered from Chickens for Back Yards. We ordered through Chickens for Backyards because we could customize our flock and got a total of 6 different breeds. They came as day old chicks, hand delivered by our post master to our door. It was the cutest package to open! The chicks all arrived alive and healthy and warm and ready to join our flock! We ordered only one, but two arrived and sure enough, one turned out to be a rooster. He was a beautiful bird but unfortunately we live on 1/3 of an acre in town and the very morning he started to crow at 11 weeks, we had to find him a nice new home at a local Mennonite farm so as to keep peace with the neighbors. We ordered our chicks on 6/9/15 and they were shipped on 6/17/15. We would highly recommend this breed and Chickens for Backyards. We can’t wait for our white eggs!

    Great Chicken
I’ve read so many reviews about the personalities of the white leghorn and none of match the one I got from Chickens for Backyards. I only ordered one because I didn’t think they were very friendly. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. By 4 days old my little pullet was eating out of my hand and climbing up my arm. Now at 18 weeks, she prefers to ride on my shoulder and talk my ear off. If I had known how sweet they were, I would certainly have ordered more. I highly recommend the white leghorn.

    So happy to find you!
I am so happy to finally locate a hatchery that caters to small flocks and doesn’t have such a high minimum. I just placed my first order and can’t wait to get my Golden Comet, Rhode Island Red, and Barred Plymouth Rock. I already have 5 leghorn hens and 1 (mistake) leghorn rooster that I got in August from the “Tractor” chain who had a minimum purchase of 6. They are all doing great and all 5 of my hens are laying just about every day now. My leghorn hens are skittish but not aggressive. They will jump in my lap and follow me around but do not like me touching or holding them. The rooster was the sweetest chick and let me handle him but once he started crowing, he started challenging me. Now I have to watch him or suffer the consequences. He does take care of his girls though. They are great egg layers but I can’t wait to get my sweet new brown egg layers!
