These rare birds of Dutch origins emerged in Holland early in the 20th century. The Welsummer chicken was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1991.
These chickens have a beautiful loose or soft, feathered plumage that is black and brownish red, somewhat similar to the Rhode Island Red. Welsummer chickens are mostly sought after for their large, deep dark reddish-brown eggs. Some of the eggs will also have brown spots on them too. The baby chicks can be color sexed which makes this breed an exciting chicken for the kids to hatch. The Kellogg’s Cornflakes chicken is a Welsummer.
We are selling Welsummer chicks because of their many wonderful characteristics and excellent egg production. They are an all-around good chicken for anything from showing, to egg production or meat, and pet chickens. The Welsummer is also a very intelligent breed that matures early, is very cold hardy, and is active foragers. These chickens are also known for their ability to lay eggs in the winter. You really can’t go wrong with this friendly breed.

Such sweet girls!
These little welsummers are just sweet hearts! They are great with kids and get along well with all the other hens. I had a great experience with chickens for backyards. All my chicks arrived warm (despite it being 19 degrees) and perfectly healthy.

Gorgeous Breed
Shimmers in the light and is beautiful. Very calm and relaxed and will walk over my boots if I am standing in the run. Fast shipment and show quality traits! The only question you should be asking is how many can I buy!

Beautiful Hen
We wanted a variety of chickens and egg colors which is the reason we ordered from Chickens for Back Yards. so we could customize our flock and got a total of 6 different breeds. They came as day old chicks, hand delivered by our post master to our door. It was the cutest package to open! The chicks all arrived alive and healthy and warm and ready to join our flock! We ordered only one Welsummer and now at 11 weeks she is a beautiful bird! She is the smallest of our flock and we have named her Mini. Her coloring is gorgeous, almost like a pheasant or other wild game bird. We ordered our chicks on 6/9/15 and they were shipped on 6/17/15. We would highly recommend this breed and Chickens for Backyards. We can’t wait for the eggs and to see the variety of colors among our flock!

Beautiful, Healthy Birds
We ordered 6 different breeds and I think these are the most beautiful. The partridge coloring is so pretty! The Welsummers get along well with the other chickens, but aren’t the most interested in us. Chasing them does give our kids some exercise 🙂

Four active, fluffy, and healthy Welsummer chicks arrived safe and warm. All of the chicks have turned into beautiful and colorful pullets. Thank you for a great experience purchasing poultry.

I was lucky enough to look right before the hatch date of Welsummers on the site. They are my families favorite breed. The process of purchasing on the internet was simple with immediate conformation via email. I ordered 5 pullets and 1 rooster. They shipped late Wednesday night and arrived at the post office first thing Friday morning. They sounded great in the shipping box. When I opened the box we found 7 vibrant and active Welsummer chicks. These are the most beautiful Welsummer chicks that I have ever seen.. All are eating, drinking and doing well in the brooder. Thanks Chickens for Backyards!
I will say one thing about shipping: Don’t pay so much attention to the tracking number with USPS. Its wacky and had my arrival date as being Monday instead of Friday. That’s a BIG difference when you are shipping live birds. Thanks again CFB, you guys came through when the other hatcheries could not!
With thanks,
Ryan C.

My second order with CFB was 2 Welsummer male chicks in addition to 2 White Leghorn female chicks. All chicks arrived safely and in good health with an extra White Leghord in the shipping container. A week later all are growing and doing well. Thanks again for a great experience CFB…2 thumbs up!
