The Royal Palm turkey was developed by Enoch Carson of Lake Worth, Florida in the 1920s.  They first appeared by chance in a mixed flock of Black, Bronze, Narragansett, and Wild turkeys on his farm. He then began to selective breed until he had a whole flock of Royal Palms. These turkeys are similar to a European variety called the Pied, Crollwitz, or Black-laced White, which has been known since the 1700s. The Royal Palm was recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1971.

True Royal Palm turkeys are remarkably attractive small-sized turkey that will not have any color tinting. They are prominently white with crisp contrasting, metallic black edging on the feathers. Their heads, throat and wattles are red and changeable to a bluish white. They have a light horn beak and light brown eyes. Their legs and toes are deep pink. The beard is black.

This beautiful breed is used primarily as an exhibition variety. They lack commercial potential due to their size. Royal Palm turkeys breed true and would be great for small farms, or for home production of meat. They can lead a long and productive breeding life and are ready to process in about 28 weeks. They are active, excellent foragers, and are great at insect control. They are also good flyers which help keep them safe from predators. Overall the Royal Palm turkey is an excellent choice for your backyard.
