Black Copper Marans have a long history, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. During this time period, the earliest Marans were thought to be produced from wild “swamp hens” and victorious game birds brought to the French ports on English ships. In the 19th century, farmers started to take an interest in the Marans breed and formed standards. Although the interest took a steep decline during WWII, individuals kept the breed going strong. Around the year 1990, the standards were set for the French Black Copper Marans and they now have a worldwide interest.
The French Black Copper Marans is the rarest dark brown egg layer in the United States. In 2010, they were admitted to the American Standard of Perfection.
These lightly feather legged birds lay the darkest chocolate brown colored eggs. On average, they lay about 150-200 large eggs per year. Hens will weigh around six pounds and the rooster will be around eight pounds.
The French Black Copper Marans are excellent dual purpose birds that are friendly, beautiful, and make good pets. They are active foragers and also adapt well in confinement.
