The Dominique breed, commonly referred to as “Dominikers,” is believed to have been developed in England and then came to America with the pilgrims during the colonization of America. They are known for being America’s first breed. In 1874, the breed was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection.
Their popularity has been a bit of a roller coaster. Up until the mid-19th century, they were the most popular breed in America. They survived the Great Depression in the 1930s most likely due to their ability to self-sustain. It was at this point in history where this bird almost became extinct because the popularity switched to the Barred Rock. In 1970, there were only four known flocks owned by: Henry Miller, Edward Uber, Robert Henderson, and Carl Gallaher. These men agreed to participate in a breed rescue. From 1983-2006, the popularity of the Dominique breed steadily increased so much so to the point where they currently remain on The Livestock Conservancy watch list. In the year 2007, a study found the popularity was beginning to decrease again, most likely due to older breeders not being involved in the process.
The Dominique chicken has a beautiful tight plumage that keeps them warm in the winter so they don’t get frostbite. Due to the pattern of their plumage which is similar to a hawk’s coloring, they make great predator resistant birds for families who like to let their birds’ free range. In fact, this breed produces so many feathers that some people use them to make pillows or featherbeds. The Dominique chicken is also a well behaved bird to show off, which makes it a great choice for your FFA or 4-H students.
If you are looking for an excellent dual purpose bird then the Dominique is the perfect choice. They grow to a nice size and weight and are dependable, hardy layers even in marginal weather. These chickens are excellent foragers and very easy to care for. The hens are known for being broody, making them perfect for families who would like to have the experience of hatching eggs. Although they are very cold hardy, the Dominique chicken adapts well to both hot and humid climates, as well.
Dominique chickens are known for their docile demeanor, especially the hens which are very gentle. The roosters however are sometimes known for being aggressive toward other roosters and even humans. Some people say that the roosters are so aggressive, they’ve killed small rodents and snakes before. For the most part however, the Dominique is a calm bird that would make a great family backyard chicken.
