The Buff Orpington chicken breed originated in Orpington, England, in the late 1800s, which explains their rather majestic name. When people raise chickens to supply eggs at home, they choose the Buff Orpington. They’re a popular chicken breed to raise as pets, and they are one of just a few docile and gentle laying hens. Buff Orpington chickens have a distinguished trait that’s tan colored and fluffy: their feathers. They are classified as a large bird and much of the reason is their thick stature and illusion of being even larger than their actual size, due to a heavy concentration of down feathers that puff out their outer feathers. As a result, this particular breed can live in very cold climates and is very well adapted to free range chicken coops. However, they are recommended to have shelter when it rains as their fluffy feathers allow rain to penetrate their plumage. With hens normally reaching an average weight of 7 pounds and roosters reaching up to about 8 ½ pounds, these chickens don’t fly. This makes it easier for them to be cared for in residential or confined settings.
Buff Orpington chickens are good brown egg layers throughout the seasons and will account for about 150 eggs per year. If you are looking for gentle breeds with a good setter/mother, shop with us at Chickens for Backyards today. We have Buff Orpington bred baby chicks for sale at unbeatable prices.
