The Jersey Black Giants were first developed between 1870 and 1890 by two brothers named John and Thomas Black in the state of New Jersey. The original intent was to produce a bird to replace the turkey on the dining room table. Due to the slower maturing nature of the breed, they became a beloved egg producer and cherished member of small and large flocks everywhere. These big birds have become a favorite for backyard hobbyists in recent years due to their hardiness and dependable laying of large brown and dark brown eggs. Their large bodies are covered with beautiful black feathers that illuminate a green sheen in the sunlight. Although they can become broody and make wonderful mothers, it is helpful to sometimes incubate their eggs as the portly hens could possibly crack them if in an overcrowded nesting area or inadequate nesting box. They are the largest pure breed of chicken in the United States and do well in all regions. As with all breeds, it’s important to have shade available in the heat of the summer. Although the word “Giant” usually implies something huge and threatening, it could not be further from the truth in this case. Most hens can reach 10 pounds and roosters about 13 pounds.
