Between the years of 1870 and 1890, John and Thomas Black first developed the Black Jersey Giant in none other than New Jersey. The brothers’ original intent was to produce a bird that would replace the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. However, due to the slower maturing nature of the breed, they became a favorite egg producer and cherished member of small and large flocks everywhere.
The Black Jersey Giantbreed has become a favorite for backyard hobbyists in recent years due to their hardiness and reliable laying capabilities. They lay large sized eggs that are dark brown in color. This breed of large bodied chickens is covered with beautiful black feathers that illuminate a green sheen in the sunlight. The hens can become broody, and they make wonderful mothers. It does help to sometimes incubate their eggs as the portly hens could possibly crack them if they’re in an overcrowded nesting area or inadequate nesting box.
The Black Jersey Giant is the largest pure bred chicken in the United States and does well in all regions. As with all breeds, it’s important to provide them a source of shade in the summertime. Although the word “Giant” usually implies something huge and threatening, it could not be further from the truth in this case. Most hens can reach 10 pounds and roosters about 13 pounds.
