Turken “Naked Neck” chickens are named for their most unique characteristic; their featherless neck. This gives them a similar appearance to a turkey, giving rise to the name Turken, though the two are not related. Despite their featherless necks, Turkens are cold-hardy chickens originally bred in the Transylvanian region of Romania. They are common in Europe, though much rarer in America. Missing feathers and being easier for chefs to pluck, they were originally bred for meat production, though they are also good-natured chickens with high egg production.
