The Delaware chicken was developed by breeding together the black and white striped Barred Plymouth Rock and the proud, long-feathered New Hampshire chicken. Growing to about seven or eight pounds and reaching maturity quickly, this breed is popular for meat production. Hens lay between 180 and 260 eggs a year, so it is also popular as a dual-purpose breed. With long, thick feathers, the Delaware chicken will withstand cold weather well. This breed also has a calm, docile temperament, so it will get along well with other chicken breeds.
